RANURA
Summer 2020 Compact Housing Project competition entry- Partner: Isabella Giammatteo
This housing competition entry focused on providing as much access to private and shared outdoor space as possible. We situated the design in Miami in order to take advantage of the weather, but also to address the lack of private outdoor space in Miami’s current urban design. This competition took place at the height of the COVID pandemic and so this design also allows occupants to get sunshine and fresh air without risking exposure to others.
Key Takeaways:
This quick, two-week long exercise gave us an opportunity to work to balance and prioritize the competition deliverables with our personal interests. We chose to focus on developing the design as much as possible, going into details about the types of plants and interior textures that each type of apartment would house. Our aim was to challenge ourselves to focus on the livability that makes apartment design unique from other typologies.
The apartment complex consists of a mix of one bed, two bed, and three bed units to create a diverse mix of tenants and living conditions. apart from the walls for the bathrooms, all the internal walls are movable and collapsible to allow for changing bedroom numbers and sizes, and to allow for spaces to be opened up and segmented off as privacy needs shift.
